Courage
What is the opposite of fear? We all fear, right? Now some of you young guys are going to say “Pffft. Not me!” Face it, we all have fears. I’ll freely admit that I’m fearful of many things. But how do we conquer it? People say that to conquer something you need to know what the opposite is and do that. So let us look deeper into fear, and truly examine what we shall find there.
First off, courage is nothing in and of itself. Mainly because it’s not a base emotion. Courage always comes from something else. There isn’t anyone who isn’t afraid of anything. Yes, we can meet fear bravely, and not be put down by it, but you will always feel it. But to have courage, you must base it off something else. Not the presence of fear, because then we would all be courageous. Anyone who’s been through extremely trying times will agree. You don’t just randomly become courageous because you feel like it. No, it’s always based on something else. Based off of a feeling for something else. A need to protect usually.
Since courage isn’t a base emotion then, since it must be based on something else, what does that leave? Well, think about it for a minute. Think of something that you would protect with you life no matter what. What is it? Why would you defend it? At the absolute bottom, you would risk your life for it because you love it. Because that thing is worth more to you than your life. What else can bring forth that kind of courage? Nothing. As the bible says, love conquers all. Especially fear. So why on earth would I want to put something like this up? I’ve been thinking about it. I’ve had several people tell me that they appreciate my being open that I have fear. “Most guys, especially teen-agers, don’t want to admit that. They want to say they can take on the world.” Well, I’m not saying I can’t take on the world, just saying I might be slightly nervous! But if the thing that conquers fear is love, than how does this relate in the “real world”? As a Navy SEAL, am I going to be without fear? Of course not. I will be trained to face that fear, but there’s a bigger reason I can face it. I have a family who loves me backing me up. I’ve got a nation that is worth defending (though it’s heading downhill very quickly). “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love." -1 John 4:18
We need people who are willing to stand for what’s RIGHT! Does anyone know what that means anymore? Everyone is so wrapped up in what they want, in an emotional whirl-wind of searching for anything that makes them happy. We go about helping each other completely wrong. But who wil point it out? Are we just going to sit by and watch and hope someone does something? No! We need action! I hear so many people complain, but no one does anything. Summer is here! You’re freer than you think. Use your freedom to do something! Help someone. Teach someone.
But how do we stop the “system”? We need someone who is willing to stand for what’s right and not back down. We need leaders who can take the flak and remain standing! We need Reagan’s. Why does it seem that as soon as someone gets into office, everything they promised just evaporates? They forget… “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” If you feel that something is wrong, stand up! Don’t be afraid! Point it out to the world, with humility and using logic, and you would be surprised how many will follow.
I’ve tried my best for a little over a year(oh yeah, LONG time!) and all I’ve really seen is: people don’t like being presented with contrary views. They want to be right. If they’re wrong, they’ll do anything to prove they’re right or that you’re a liar. Even people that I would consider friends will go to tremendous measures over little tings just to prove you wrong. If they can’t prove one thing, they move onto something else, or shift what they’re saying just so they’re right. So, a word of advice: by all means, go out into the world! Point out what is wrong(with humility!) but be ready to take flak. “They will hate you since they first hated me”. We as Christians are called to change the world. Christ doesn’t want “numbers” or seat warmers, He doesn’t care how big your church is. He doesn’t care how “user-friendly”, He wants people who live out their faith. Frankly, I don’t see that much anymore. Especially the christian young people. We aren’t interested in following the Lord of the universe. We want what makes us happy first, then if we have spare time we’ll do what Christ asks. We want to worship how we want too, not how He’s told us. We want to dress how we want to, not with caution and modesty. We want to listen to our heavy metal, because we “relate”. How can you relate? You’ve lived a life of ease your whole life compared to most of the world! Christ wants people who will face the devil and overcome! And fear won’t stop us, because we have true love on our side. Not the touchy, feely, emotional kind of love, but the kind that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was willing to come and die for us love. We have a love that is just and merciful, and yet jealous. “The Lord your God is a jealous God.” And THAT is worth telling people about, no matter what they say!
So fear is a natural occurance. But we something to courageous about that is worth more than all this
world! “If Christ is for us, who can be against us?” It doesn’t really matter what other people do, so long as
you’re in God’s word.

Music in Worship
If we as Christians expect to have an impact in our world, than we must needs first start with our worship of the Most High God. How about the music? I’ve heard people say they don’t want to play for church because the songs are kind of boring. Or we sing to many psalms. Or we need more upbeat music in general. “Those hymns are pretty slow. We need to sing things that fill your soul with fire, or at least gets your blood flowing!” But how are we supposed to worship? This ties into several things that I’ve seen recently. It all boils down, as always, to our view of God. Are we there to worship so that we feel better, or are we there to worship because He is ALMIGHTY GOD and it’s the greatest honor we can have in world?
Now before we get started, I want to say that I enjoy music. I love singing! (Even when it sounds pretty bad…) Many genres, and many styles. But even though I like Coldplay, it would be nearly blasphemous to sing “Viva La Vida” for a worship service.
Music appears all over in the bible. This isn’t even a question of whether we should have music in worship. We should. But even if there is a great song, it doesn’t mean that we can sing it for church. Just as you would not play a waltz at a funeral, or ragtime for when the bride is walking the aisle, so we must be cautious what music we insert into our worship. I feel that many of my evangelical friends want to insert music “they like” into worship, instead of looking at what its purpose is, and what the occasion is. I love Tchaikovsky, but I wouldn’t play his work for a church service. The problem is not with the song itself, or music in general, but rather the occasion.
Hebrews 12:28-29 says “Wherefore we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptable with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming fire.” Consuming fire. He’s not a God who is just happy with anything we throw at Him, so long “as our hearts are in the right place”. Much of the Old Testament is a story of Israelites who strayed from Him just a little bit, made a smug of the fine line, and were punished. Cain, Nadab and Abihu, and many others. Offering wrong sacrifices happened over and over. Our worship is a sacrifice in a way. It should be a “pleasant aroma to Heaven”, and God has shown us what is pleasant and what is not. In worship, music is a strong part of the service. Some music is superior in some settings, and sometimes it is inferior. Just as Mozart fits a cathedral, it just isn’t right to watch a wrestling match or hockey game in a cathedral. So it all comes down to what music is fitting and appropriate. Amos 5:21-24 speaks about how God despised the sacrifices, not necessarily because they were wrong, but because the hearts of the people were wrong. If you were asked to sing before the Queen, would we be so flippant as we are during worship? Getting up or talking, thinking about dinner later that day, or what we want for our coming birthday? If you were with the Queen, you wouldn’t be able to focus on anything else except the fact that she was talking to you! How much more with God?
So we keep talking (or I keep talking, you’re just sitting there shaking your head and grumbling to yourself, asking why you’re reading this instead of reading the news) about what music is appropriate, but how do we actually determine that? We are tempted so often to determine if the music is appropriate by “how it made me feel.” Well, hate to break it to you, but in this matter, you don’t really matter that much! The music is for the worship of GOD, not trying to fill you with warm fuzzies! We are told to sing “songs, psalms, and spiritual songs.” The main purpose of our worship is to glorify God. Not to fill us with fuzzies, get us to run the aisles, or lull us to sleep. The temple musicians were required to be skilled.
Col. 3:16 talks about how we must have the spirit of God dwell in us richly, and the result is rich music. Our music must be beautiful, from out heart, and truth from His word. Not some repetitive ditty that repeats the same verse fifty times, but something with meaning and power. I strongly feel that the music should be more complex. It should be difficult because we want to give our best to God! And we don’t just sing the words because that’s what we’re supposed to do. We sing with all the gusto we can gather (even if we’re a terrible singer. You’re not singing to the people next to you!) And we do all this for one reason alone: God is worthy!
I don’t feel that the modern style of Christian music that you hear on the radio is appropriate because it is so easy to lose your focus on God. When singing “Immortal, Invisible, God only wise”, it’s a little harder to focus on yourself than when you’re singing along with a full drum set and guitar solo, singing “Jesus is my boyfriend” songs, and running the aisle (that’s why you wore sneakers to church, right?) The focus isn’t supposed to be on us, but on God. It is meant to glorify and worship HIM, not us, and if we as the church want to start making a difference, than it must start in our worship. The music is just one small part of it!
Now as an aside, I will grant that some bands have songs that are closer to what we might sing in church: Newsboys, Casting Crowns, etc. These are good songs, and many of them are ok to sing in church, but you want to be careful that it’s not the only thing you’re singing. Within the psalms, there are many different types of psalm. Other than praise, there are penitentiary psalms, psalms of blessing, asking for deliverance. We don’t sing the same type over and over. And so it should be with our hymns. It is fine to sing a “gung-ho praise song” every now and then, but it shouldn’t be the only thing we sing. As always, it takes discretion and wisdom. Doesn’t all of life…

As if God wasn't good enough
It was earth day a little while back… And once again time to look at how we treat the earth, and what we can do to save it! My solution: why bother? (Stunned silence) Now, this may sound cruel and stupid to someone of lesser intelligence, so maybe we should think about it. But first, a little bit of my background. I’m home schooled, so we save energy there by not having to go ride on a bus or sit in a huge building that is heated by ultra-furnaces that waste millions of dollars on heat that escapes through windows, while keeping the rooms slightly chilly. Unless of course you just leave the heat off and let the kids shiver in freezing rooms. Next, I ride my bike everywhere. Take that you hippies! Yes, they are always telling people to bike or bus. Well, I do that. And most places that aren’t within biking distance (more than about 12 miles), I take the bus. But that’s more for exercise and financial benefits than for “saving the earth”. My family heats our house with a wood stove! (Hey, my extremely left-wing professor was very impressed and made a big point of telling the whole class.) Go pollution, but at least we aren’t putting carbon in the air! (How does that work out?) I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and often buy locally. So there’s lot’s of saving of the planet there! And I recycle! And usually use paper bags because they make good kindling for my fireplace. Plastic usually doesn’t burn too well… Oh, and I don’t actually read most of the newspaper. I read some of the liberal columns for laughs, but it also is for my fireplace. And I only use my TV once in awhile, turn the lights off when I leave a room, and I always leave my stereo off when I’m not using it. And, of course, I use incandescent light bulbs.
Now you might say, “hold on! They aren’t ‘green’”. Of course they are! They are actually much “greener” than the fluorescent light bulbs. Think about it: you’re filling the fluorescent bulbs with mercury! How lethal is that? Have you ever PLAYED with mercury? That’s pretty wicked stuff! Also, they’re all made in China. (Of course that’s ok though, just like we don’t make solar panels here anymore because they ruin the environment) Sooo… You’re going to make these bulbs, ship them thousands of miles across the ocean, then truck them hundreds of miles, use them until they burn out, then throw them in some garbage heap where the mercury can finish ruining the environment. And still have the irony to name them “green”?! Wow, that’s pretty desperate!
But that’s only one thing. There are hundreds. How about this whole “no cutting down trees whatsoever.” Which left wing liberal university did you go to? I have personal knowledge that cutting down trees is good: you go in and cut down the dead ones, and it makes room for the new growth. It bugs me to no end seeing these places that could be very nice, but we can’t touch them because they’re “natural”. More like garbage heaps… In some places, such as the Sequoia’s, they need the old growth to die before the new ones can be planted. And we’ve all heard of the forests where only fire can open the pinecones that plant new trees. So we need the foresters to go in and cut down trees and open clearings. Also, as with the rainforests, the forest is actually growing faster than we cut it down and process the trees. (Don’t hear that every day?) Remember, we don’t just cut down trees and let them lie. The foresters clean up after themselves. Often so well that nothing remains. Which chews up the ground. Which makes it really good for the new crop of trees! These are of course very helpful measures for the environment.
So, we’ve discovered that I’m way greener than most of my liberal friends. In fact, when I was going to Whatcom, we did a test to see how many “earths” we would go through. In essence, by the way we lived, if everyone lived like that, how many worlds would we go through to sustain life for 1 million years. I scored about 0.78. In a class full of hippies, the average was 2.4. My score was the lowest. Ironic huh? The only person who wasn’t out there going to protests and trying to “save the planet” was actually the one who was helping the most. On their scale! The joke never ends.
But what else… Oh yeah! What does it really matter? If the earth was billions of years old (yeah right), then why should we worry? No matter what we did, we couldn’t kill it and we couldn’t save it! Our impact either way couldn’t change the world. Yeah, according to the evolutionist mindset, we could wipe our race out, but that’s the worse. (And there’s plenty of people I sure wouldn’t mind becoming “extinct”) And if it was created by an all-powerful God, who has set up rules that it will follow, then how can we destroy it? Wouldn’t He, since He made us, thought of what our limits were? Many of my Christian friends believe this “Green Lie”, and I want to ask: how? Believing in all the Global Warming hype is like asking the question: could God make a rock so big that even He couldn’t lift it? The answer is: it doesn’t matter, because that’s not the God that we find in the Bible. I’m not saying He could or couldn’t, just that He wouldn’t because it doesn’t matter. And us assuming that we are powerful enough to destroy the world is extremely arrogant! So how can one be a Christian when one worships the earth? And that is what these people do. Whether they admit it or not, the people who believe in Global Warming and things of that sort are chasing after other god’s. They are putting the earth above God, and setting us up as demigods, because now we can control the universe!
God has put us as stewards of his earth, but we aren’t to worship it. We are to tend the earth, and have dominion
over it. Over all the beasts of the field, birds of the air, and the fish of the sea. God has given mankind dominion, whether you like it or not. Face it, we are the dominant species. But I don’t think we could destroy it if we tried. You hear about fish that were thought to be extinct several “millions” of years ago, and they find thousands of these off the coasts of little islands where the natives use them as a main staple of food. (Then of course they go in and make it so the fish are endangered and if you hunt them than you get sent to prison for the rest of your life… When the natives have been hunting them for centuries!) Yes, some species have died out. And in a way it is mans doing. It is the result of sin. When man sinned, the world got cursed. All of creation has been punished because of Adam. Even though animals cannot in and of themselves sin, they are affected by it just as much as we are. It is a sad fact. But that is what happens when you are given responsibility and turn around and laugh in the face of an almighty God.

Reasons for SEALs
I posted this on facebook awhile back, and people still keep mentioning it or commenting about it. So for your approval
I get many reactions when I tell people that I’m going into the SEALs. Everything from “Oh, so you’re one of those people that want to defend the jerks in Washington”, to “So you’re a Bush-guy war monger? Or do you just want to kill people?” And everything in between. But what does it really mean? Sometimes I try and explain, but often times I just turn away, and think, “It’s so much more than that.” How do you explain to someone who thinks you’re crazy that it’s not really that? Well, maybe I am a little crazy, (or a lot… it’s under debate) but that’s beside the point! How do you tell people that you don’t want to join the most extreme and difficult military team in the world just to kill people, when they’re dead set that that’s what you’re doing? Or talk to someone who feels that you’re doing it because you’re a liberal (which I am not, if you haven’t figured out), and you just want to “defend your kind”. Why would those be worth fighting for? If it was only that which I was fighting for, I could join a gang or the police.
Some people may very well think I’m crazy. Especially after reading some of my notes. But other than that, why would someone want to join a military branch where everything is pushed to absolute extremes, and your daily life is something that most people consider impossible? Let’s start at the beginning (I think it’s a pretty good place to start). First off, as a Christian, I believe that murder is wrong. However, I do know that sometimes to prevent something worse, people must be punished. For instance, David is called a “bloody man” several times, and yet was also called “a man after God’s own heart”. There were good and bad things about him being a bloody man. He wasn’t allowed to build the temple, but he was promised that a nation would rise from him. Because he was a bloody man, he couldn’t fulfill the position of priest, but he could raise a nation. And in that time in Israel’s history, that was what they needed.
Also, I believe that everyone has a different calling in life. There are PLENTY of jobs that I could not do, and often times for little things like not knowing computers or not being able to sit still for eight hours driving a bus. But this is one job that I see should be filled, and I feel that I can do it. God has given each of us special talents. So am I a warmonger? NO! I hate killing and think that it’s one of the most unnatural and hateful sins. Most don’t understand what it’s like to absolutely hate violence. “In the jungle when two tigers fight, one is maimed, and the other killed.” (Master Funakoshi) Whenever you have a battle, there are always losses. Even with the victors. You can never have a fight where no one gets hurt.
And I believe that a lot of people don’t understand this. They want to fight because it’s “cool”, or maybe they just want to prove something. But war is terrible. Killing is terrible. You are scarred for life, and those who deny it before hand are often scarred terribly. Without God, it is impossible to live with that fact. Most people have terrible mental injuries. “I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.” (Dwight D Eisenhower)
But I want to live by this: “The fastest draw is when the sword never leaves the scabbard, the strongest way to block, is never to provoke a blow, and the cleanest cut is the one withheld.” (Samurai proverb) It’s true, I don’t want to have to take someone’s life. But if I needed to, I would. But never, ever would it be easy for me! The SEALs say, “the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.” Train for max pain, so that you may live to fight again. But also, when one of their numbers die, it hurts that much more. When Operation Redwing failed, 11 SEALs were killed. The largest KIA ever in SEAL history. And as such, it hurt that much more. As a British soldier put it, “Look at an infantryman's eyes and you can tell how much war he has seen.” War is a terrible thing. And we humans are not invincible. We like to think we are, but think about how easily it is for us to get hurt and die. One bullet, a car wreck, or even slipping on ice. Drowning, and there are hundreds of other things that kill. Fragilely and wonderfully made.
I heard a Japanese proverb that said, “Only a true warrior may choose pacifism.” And I don’t mean, “Only someone who is really violent can be a pacifist.” What I mean is “only those who have seen action truly know how terrible and despicable it is. So only they have ability and the knowledge to do what needs to be done to prevent it.” Which is what bugs me so much about hardly anyone in our government having been in the military. They sit there making rules for the soldiers, and yet have no idea about what it’s like on the field. So do I think war is necessary? Definitely. So long as there are people out there who want to kill and terrorize people to get their way, I believe that I should stand and stop them. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” (Unknown) We each have our own strengths.

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: "Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident."
Most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.
I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin's egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful. For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.
"There are the wolves," the old war veteran said, "and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy." Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.
"Then there are sheepdogs," he went on, "and I'm a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf."
If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath--a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog that intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.
Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn't tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, "Baa." Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog. As Kipling said in his poem about "Tommy" the British soldier:
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that,
an' "Tommy, fall be'ind,"
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir,"
when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys,
there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir,"
when there's trouble in the wind.
Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.
Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently: The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most citizens in America said, "Thank God I wasn't on one of those planes." The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, "Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference." When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference.
While there is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, he does have one real advantage -- only one. He is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population.So that is what I am. A sheepdog. It angers me when I see people hurt. I long to protect the weak and innocent. Will I get respect for it? From some, yes. From many, no. Does that really matter? Let me put it this way instead: even if it did matter, would it stop me? Probably not. I’m not saying that I don’t respect people. No, I love people! I look around me, and can see it all passing away. It is so easy to bring grief. Like I said, I can’t stand it when I hear stories of people getting mugged, or see people who have scars from violent crimes. I don’t know why, but it always angers me. I hate to see people helpless. So that is why I want to be a SEAL. I want to able to fight that. I want to be able to stand up for those who cannot or will not stand up for themselves.
Of course, that raises the question: where do you draw the line? Do you take down everyone who is mean-spirited? Do you stand up for everyone who tries to disown you and cast you down? Of course not. That is where wisdom comes in. You need to know when to say, “I’ve done enough”, and when to say “nothings going to stop me!”
And as George Washington put it, “The best way to keep peace is to be prepared for war.” Yes, even though it is now politically incorrect to call them terrorists, I will still call them that. For that is what they are. And so long as they and others are out there, the only way to dissuade them is to show them that you are ready to fight if need be. We lived for over one hundred years without terrorist attacks. Why? Because we conquered them at Tripoli, and we beat the English, the Germans, the Japanese, and anyone else who wanted to fight. But with all of them, we let them keep their land and continue to grow. Until Korea and Vietnam. Then all the sudden the American public wasn’t behind the military, and we decided that we didn’t need to win. Since then, we’ve gone halfway into several countries. And back in the 90’s when we were first attacked by terrorists, we didn’t stop them. So now they have seen that the time is ripe, and America is ready to fall. And we don’t have anyone in power with the guts to stand up to them, or the wisdom to do it correctly.
But there’s an even yet bigger part of the equation. You probably saw this coming, but I feel that the military (and our country) have turned from God. We are godless and proud of it. We chase the temptations of the world, and mock anyone who has enough wisdom to turn away. We want everyone to do as we do, because then we can feel justified. We live with our boyfriend/girlfriend, and our reason is “well, everyone else is doing it.” We live in a “me” centered world. This is what the terrorists see and mock. And the American military may be one the best and cleanest militaries in the world, but it is still full of perverse and foolish men and women. True, they “stand for their morals.” But the problem is with their morals. They say they’re good people, but good by their standards. And God’s are much higher! (If you want more of my thoughts on morals, read my note “Morals”. That’s the way it is with most of this. If you have thoughts, I have probably already written a note on it.)
So why the Navy SEALs? Well, I heard about them when I was about 8-9, and by the time I was about 11, I pretty much had my mind made up that that was what I wanted to do. Why? I still don’t completely know! People ask me that, and I can’t really answer. If I wanted to answer fully, it’d take me hours. It’s not something I can point to and say, “This is why I want to be a SEAL!” It’s everything. Sitting on a couch at friends’ houses, I notice that I’m always listening, always alert. It’s not intentional; it’s just a part of who I am. When driving or riding with someone else, I always check traffic. (Which bugs some people) I always feel this need to push myself. To be better!
God has a purpose and use for me and all of us, and life is so much easier if we seek out his will and follow that.

It only takes one man
Sorry this is so lengthy. I tried to trim it down, but there is a lot that can be said on the issue. It is so important that we have men who will stand for what is right! You can never stress that too much...
William Wilberforce was told that he could not stop the slave trade. Indeed, for many years that is the way it looked. He spent his health, and his life trying to abolish slavery, and in the end finally made the change. Many along the way told him to stop, that it wasn’t worth fighting, but today he is a hero. If anyone remembers his name. He stood against the stream, and changed the course of British history.
When Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson first applied for the academy, many people didn’t think he’d make it. In fact, after his first year there and being in last place on everything, most people told him the military was not for him. Today, he is considered one of the greatest strategists to date, and he really changed the way we fight today. In fact, during the Mexican war, he was the one who stood firm when everyone else was falling back. He had his men drag a cannon up close enough to shoot at the gates of the city, and fired it until the gates fell. His men panicked and hid in the ditch for most of it. So we would have lost that fight, and probably the war, except he was willing to do what it took to win. This man who everyone said wouldn’t make it in the military.
Robert Goddard was told that he was insane for trying to create rockets. He did his testing and ended up passing away before anyone ever realized what the advantages of flying were. When they finally came to his estate, he had died. But most of the technology that we use today with jets is from Goddard. He went from being some insane person who wouldn’t take no for an answer, to being the father of modern aviation.
And those aren’t even the Christian examples. We have Moses, Abraham, Joseph, and Joshua. The Apostle Paul stood before Caesar, John Paul Jones refused to quite when it looked like his ship would sink, and many many others. All of history has been led and shaped by men and women who were willing to against the tide and stand for what they knew was right! There have always been plenty of people who are willing to go with the flow, just kind of coast along, but not many who are willing to stand up. And yet, it is always those who are willing to stand up that end up changing the world! "If you don't like change, you're going to like irrelevance even less."-General Eric Shinseki
Before you can decide to stand up for or against something, you need to understand why. Not only logically but ethically and morally. Many people are willing to stand up for something which they have given almost no thought to. Or at least they say that. Many people that I debate about evolution will stoutly defend it when I’m asking them the easy questions to build a base, but as soon as I apply pressure, they say “well, I don’t completely hold to it”, or “I haven’t really thought about it that hard”, or “well, if you showed me something that made more sense I would believe that.” or of course my favorite, where they just try and ignore the subject because they don’t like conflict, “well, it’s obvious we have different views. So I’ll just believe what I want and you can believe what you want.” Then they go find one of my weak-minded friends and start hammering them with crazy ideas. Which, they say, they “don’t really believe.” It all makes perfect sense! Doesn’t matter how many times I point out that creation has a much better base than evolution, and makes logical sense, they still recite the same thing. Like a broken record. It’s sad. But many Christians are the same way. We never really think through what we believe, and when someone comes up and says “homosexuality is good and natural”, “Christians are haters and extremely biased”, or “deism is the only true way”, all we can say is “ um, uh, what’s a deist?” We stagger along, heralding our beliefs until we hit any sort of opposition, then we cower in the corner and agree with everything that the other person is saying so that they will stop bugging us.
The fact is, when people choose to be brave rather than smart, their courage is so threatening to those who choose to be smart rather than brave that they end up being maligned not encouraged. Because being brave doesn’t look smart. Standing in front of Nebuchadnezzar and saying, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand. But if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image that you have set up.” That is what we should be doing. Makes us wish we could do it, but we don’t really want to. We want to be brave, but we also want to be safe. We wish that we could fight lions that only appear to be deadly, but really have no tooth or claw.

Inaction never got anyone anywhere. How can we “go into the world, making disciples of all nations and baptising in the name of the Father, the Son, and the holy Spirit”, if we’re sitting there cowering, waiting for the unbelievers to convert themselves. Sorry bub, it doesn’t work that way! If you want something, you have to work for it. If you want to get in shape, you have to hit the gym every day. If you want to become a business manager, you have to take the right classes, and have some sort of year-by-year schedule that you can follow. If you want to be president, I guess you just have to know how to talk nice. So that one should be easy…

You’ve probably heard the saying “you only go around once, so grab for all the gusto you can get.” In a way, this actually rings true. We only have one shot at this world. We are given orders from an all-powerful and holy God, and told how we are to act and react, and then sent out into the world. But you only get one shot. Would you rather go out and change the world or sit around and dream of changing the world? I would rather make as many people THINK as possible than just sit there watching them. It bugs me to no end when people make false statements and accusations, and it bugs me even more when they scorn or mock someone who has the right view, just can’t stand up for themselves because they’ve never taken the time to think it out. They need a leader. One who is “A good leader, who talks little, and when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say, 'We did this ourselves.'" Lao Tzu.”
Changing the world is hard work though, and I’m not saying Kool-Aid is going to make it easy! It’s not easy. People will hate you for standing up against their views. You may learn how to debate all you want, but the fact still remains that when you actually go out there and try to change someone’s opinion, they don’t like it. People don’t like being shown that they are wrong. It can take years to change just one person’s mind. But it’s not always for that. Sometimes, you just need to lead they. Have you ever had that? In a class for instance where the teacher says things that you know aren’t so (such as evolutionary comments) and you don’t say anything for a while because you’re afraid. You’re afraid that you’ll be the only one who holds that view, or everyone will think you’re stupid for speaking up, or some such nonsense. But then it becomes too much and you finally speak up. And most of the class agrees with you. First one than another speaks up, saying, “Yeah, I’m with that guy!” I feel that that is what we need. No one can stand alone forever, but someone needs to be the first to say, “enough is enough!” On many issues.
We need politicians who stand for what’s right, not what they’re party represents. We need pastors who preach what’s in the bible, not what people want to hear. We need teachers that teach people how to think, not what to think. We don’t need a president who can tell us how to live, we need a president who can give let us make decisions and, yes even fail at times, but learn and strive for a better tomorrow. We don’t need a Congress who keeps voting raises for themselves, we need a Congress who listens to the people and realizes the balance that must be found. We don’t need laws against guns, we need classes on safety and parents who teach their children from a young age the terrible consequences of wielding a firearm improperly. We don’t need more prisons for lifers, we need harsher punishments with a shorter sentence. But what we need is someone who isn’t afraid. Someone who can stand up for what is right, no matter how long it takes to change the world. We need someone who is willing to destroy the castles of the devil, because they realize that the castles are made of sand and the tide’s coming in. We need someone who is founded in Christ and realizes that it doesn’t matter what the world thinks because only eternity matters. “You threaten me with a fire that burns but for a moment and goes out, yet are ignorant of the fire that burns for eternity and all the ungodly are cast into. Why wait?” Polycarp. What does it matter what the world thinks? For I have an almighty God on my side, and nothing can touch me without His will!
